Where do I go for my prescriptions on campus and who should I be checking in with about my medication?

Now that you are at college, it’s important that you check in with the Disabled Student Services (DSS) office with your documentation so that they can certify that you are a student with special needs. Once that is done, you can then get in contact with the university health center to make an appointment with a physician who can continue to write prescriptions for your monthly medication refills while you are enrolled at the college. I do not recommend that you continue to call home to get a prescription and have your parents fill and mail it to you at school. You need to be responsible for your medications and have direct and immediate access to someone on campus that you can contact to discuss changes in your needs or any side effects you may experience. If your college does not have anyone that can prescribe medications for you, ask for a referral to a local psychiatrist or primary care physician who consults with the college on such matters. A letter from your initial prescribing physician may also be helpful in informing campus or local physicians about your symptoms, diagnosis, and previous medication and prescribing history. You should continue to see your primary prescribing physician back home at least once a year for re-evaluation as he or she probably knows you better.
